Sports and Creative Arts Facilities

There’s no better place than St Mark’s for students to strike a good study-life balance.   The College is second to none when it comes to a range of impressive indoor and outdoor facilities catering for students who love sports or the arts or a combination of both.

All students need a break from study and St Mark’s offers arguably the best amenities of any residential college in Adelaide.    Students seeking time out from their academic work can use the fully-equipped gym, try a game of tennis on the lawn courts or play pool in the Junior Common Room.

The College has a great variety of sports teams and spirited inter-collegiate sporting competitions which accommodate varying levels of skill.

Students who are drawn to creative pursuits can join with likeminded friends and enjoy music art and drama - or join in special events such as arts nights, the College Revue, College Play or the annual art show.  The Ballroom, Council Room,

The Junior Common Room is another place where students can take a break from study and is a fun, relaxed, inclusive social space.

Gym

The Allister McLeod Gymnasium sets the standard for on-site gym facilities at a university residential college.

Access to the large, modern, fully-equipped gym is included in student fees.   Students have daily access to the gym and can design a fitness program to ensure a healthy body and healthy mind.

It is rare to see the gym empty and it attracts students of all fitness levels who come together with a shared interest in health and wellbeing.

Tennis Courts

St Mark’s has four grass tennis courts which are ideal for a relaxing hit of tennis with friends. The grassed quadrangle at the heart of the College is also the venue for many on-site student events including Marksenfest, Tennis Day and Earth Hour. The popular lawn courts are also a great place for a kick of the footy or to study in the sunshine with friends.

Drama

Budding thespians at St Mark’s can use their talents and have fun helping stage a number of dramatic or performing art events in the Ballroom at St Mark’s.

The College Play offers opportunities to write, direct, act, work backstage or assist with make-up and costumes. The hard work and commitment in rehearsals are appreciated by the audience over two performance nights. The popular College Revue is a light-hearted series of songs and skits about life at St Mark’s.

Art

St Mark’s embraces the visual arts and hosts an annual art show called Marksenfeast for the Eyes which includes paintings, photographs, sculpture or any other mixed medium.   Students can show a piece of art they have completed previously or one created especially for the art show. Exhibits are displayed throughout the College in the Dining Hall, Library, Ballroom and Council Room.   It is another avenue for students to experiment, explore and celebrate the talents and interests of our diverse community in a supportive and stimulating environment.

Music

The College has multiple music rehearsal and performing spaces including a dedicated music room with sound equipment suitable for band practice, a mini-grand piano in the Ballroom and pianos in the Chapel and Junior Common Room. The College Choir rehearses regularly throughout the year and performs at College events, while numerous student bands perform both at College and in Adelaide’s thriving live music scene.

Junior Common Room

The Junior Common Room is social space for all students. It has a full-sized billiard table, table tennis, foosball table, lounges, pianola and a television with a full Foxtel subscription.

The room is available 24/7 and is a meeting place for students, a place to practice for the College Play or to watch TV with friends after dinner.
