Downer House Verandah

From 1956 until 1999 a total of 153 Collegians experienced one or more years in the magnificent building, first occupied by Sir John Downer, who lived there until his death in 1915. the College bought the property (designed by Rowland Rees) in 1924 and in the College's first year (1925) all students, together with the Master and Mrs Price occupied the house.

In 1946, the second Master, Mr. Bob Lewis and his wife Betty took up occupancy. As the College has grown, students no longer live in Downer House, yet it is still the centre of daily (and nightly) activity!

Work on the restoration of the Downer House verandah has commenced and it is estimated it will cost $50,000. We have received funds from the Adelaide City Council Heritage Grant of $10,000 to kick-start the project and with a further $5,000 from donations already received, we are well on the way to meeting our target.

The Buy-a-Brick Paver Project

Engraved Bricks This is a unique opportunity to have your name permanently engraved on a paver. The engraved brick pavers are feature rows around the pond in the College courtyard as part of the complete upgrade of the area.  The area was upgraded in December 2006 but space has been made for many engraved pavers to be included now and in the future so Old Collegians can continue to be part of this project.

For Old Collegians, each paver will be engraved with your name (or, if you wish, the name of a member of your family who has attended St. Mark’s) and the years in College. Friends of the College are also welcome to donate a paver, and have their name engraved. Your gift of $120 for one paver will go towards the cost of the refurbishment that has now made the courtyard a feature of the College. We are hoping that Old Collegians, friends and other supporters of the College will want to be part of this project.  The engraved pavers form several rows, complementing the new larger plain pavers that have been laid across the whole courtyard and surrounding areas.  A beautiful feature wall in the style of Downer House has been built on the western side of the courtyard.  This has extended the courtyard area and divided the courtyard and the Master's Lodge.

At the beginning of 2009, the pond was refurnished with ceramic tiles, feature lighting, external plastering to match the adjoining feature wall and new slate from Mintaro.

If you would like to make a further gift towards the project, this would also be very much appreciated.

All gifts are tax deductible. If you wish to buy a brick, please contact St. Mark's, or download the form here:

North West Corner Development at the College

St.Mark's has increased its numbers to 232 wth the completion of the North West Corner Development.

The finalisation of the development included construction of new apartments over the driveway and the extension of the Lewis Buldings together with an extension, housing a further twenty-six students. It has created an additional courtyard for the College, further enhancing its existing garden and courtyard plan. The provision of underground parking space, has been provided for in the plans, but cost has meant this has been shelved for the time being.

This has all been possible by the wonderful generosity of Old Collegians and by the College taking out commercial loans for the balance.
