When all else fails, read the instructions

Dr Lipman's book "The Human Machine Operator's Manual" was the focus of his motivating and inspiring talk .

Students were introduced to the power that psychic inertia has on patterns of human behaviour and  on how the combinations of the five senses can create deeper and longer impressions in the brain. Dr Lipman connected with all members of the audience through his diverse everyday examples such as touch typing whilst multi-tasking, finishing assignments on time, and controlling food portions.

Dr Lipman suggests that "success is the capacity to survive failure" and if one adheres to the five essential ingredients of success and happiness.  Firstly, an individual must have an inspired and focused vision, and subsequently, the zest, enthusiasm, drive, tenacity and perseverance to pursue this. The third ingredient underlines the concept of "doing it properly the first time"  and that a quality product should be the desired outcome. The penultimate factor for success touches on a sensitive element of human nature, namely criticism which should be received openly, and failure to do so may be detrimental. Finally, the brain as a machine should receive maintenance and regular monitoring to ensure that it is on the path to success.

Dr Lipman's logical and lively delivery of his ideas was thoroughly enjoyable, and definitely inspired each individual in the room to become "master of my fate" and "captain of my soul".
