Dinner to Mark the Occasion of Honorary Fellowships
A splendid dinner to mark the occasion of the election of Mr Michael Shearer AM (Honoary Fellow 2008) and newly elected Emeritus Professor Peter Parsons AM and Dr Helen Reid AM, was held in the Grenfell Price Dining Hall on the evening of Friday 27th November 2009.
In proposing the toast, Mr Rod Matheson AM QC highlighted Michael Shearer's achievements in the College with his involvement in the physical development of the College (including the North-West building redevelopment), the cultivation of the alumni, fundraising and representation of the College in the wider community.
Mr Richard Watson proposed the toast to Dr Helen Reid and spoke about her distinguished career in Education, in particular the education of girls. Dr Reid has had a close connection with St Mark's since 1991 serving on the College Council for sixteen years and the College Board for fifteen years. Helen was also a founding member of the Education Committee in 1992 and served on this committee until her retirement in 2007.
Former Master, Dr John Bannon, proposed the toast to Professor Parsons and spoke about his academic career, in particular his postgraduate study at Cambridge where he read for a PhD in genetics under Sir Ronald Fisher.The theme of Peter's work has not just been pure research, but its application, its meaning for public policy and its relevance to education and knowledge not just for a new generation of researchers but for the general public.
