It’s all about attitude!

It’s all about attitude!

The Port ‘n’ talk last night was well attended by a predominantly engineering cohort to hear Santos representatives Helena Wu and Jane Norman provide an insight into their own careers and provide an introduction to the oil and gas industry for the non-engineering students in the audience.

A Senior Reservoir Engineer at Santos, Helena introduced us to some basic engineering concepts, complete with demonstrating the porous nature of Mt Gambier limestone! Helena provided students with some very practical advice for graduate engineers, highlighting the importance of obtaining technical depth prior to broadening your skill set.

Jane’s career diversified from engineering to management and since 2005, she has headed up the Strategy and Planning Division at Santos.  A graduate chemical engineer from Sydney University, Jane completed her final year of her degree in France, then joining Shell in the Hague as a process engineer.  She had a role offshore on the Brent Field redesign project prior to obtaining a commercial role with Shell in London and then with Cazenove & Co and Goldman Sachs where she specialised in the oil and gas sectors.

Jane provided some sage advice from an employer’s perspective, highlighting the importance of establishing a sound technical base which then makes it possible to diversify and broaden your skill set and opportunities.  Her top three criteria when looking for new staff were attitude, experience and qualifications – and the emphasis on attitude is key attribute in today’s competitive market.
