J C Bannon Oration – Honouring History, Academia and St Mark’s College
May 9 @ 5:30 pm - 7:15 pm
Former Premier of South Australia, the Hon Dr John Charles Bannon AO was the Master of St Mark’s College from 2000 to 2007. He was also a student at the College in 1962-1963 as an undergraduate law student at the University of Adelaide.
The importance and perpetuity of education is a key theme that carried throughout Dr Bannon’s life: through his university years, political career, teaching roles and as an academic and historian. He also enjoyed a love of the arts, sports and history, particularly the Australian Constitution and Commonwealth/State relations.
He held numerous Board, Council and committee positions and was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia Honour in 2007.
In acknowledgement of seed funding from the Bannon family, St Mark’s will hold an annual oration, open to the public and presented by distinguished individuals who are leaders in their fields, in honour of its seventh Master.
When great thinkers and innovators share their knowledge, insights and stories, people are inspired to achieve greatness of their own.
The inaugural J C Bannon Oration, will be delivered by distinguished Australian, Air Chief Marshal, Sir Angus Houston AK, AFC (Ret’d).
In 2015 Sir Angus was awarded the Knight of the Order of Australia for extraordinary and pre-eminent achievement and merit in service to Australia, through distinguished service in the Australian Defence Force, continued commitment to serve the nation in leadership roles, particularly the national responses to the MH370 and MH17 disasters, and in a variety of roles in the community.
Sir Angus is currently the Chancellor of the University of the Sunshine Coast and Chair of the Defence South Australia Advisory Board; the Victorian Police Corporate Advisory Group; the University of NSW Canberra Advisory Board; the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and the Supashock Advanced Suspension Advisory Committee. He also serves on many boards including Virgin Australia and the Lowy Institute for International Policy.
We are honoured to have Sir Angus draw on his extensive experience and knowledge and would be delighted if you could attend.
