Senior Academic Tutor
Jess Conway is our Senior Academic Tutor and is responsible for coordinating the academic tutorial program and academic peer support for our students. Jess is in her fifth year in College and is studying fifth year Medicine at the University of Adelaide.
Academic Tutorials
Academic tutorials are usually conducted in the evenings after dinner in either the Library or other designated areas including the Council Room. Most tutors are senior students in their third, fourth or fifth year of study. There are also both residential and non-residential tutors who are graduates in their field. In 2010, we are offering tutorials in the following areas:
- Engineering
- Mathematics
- Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology)
- Medicine
- Dentistry
- Health (Physiotherapy/Human Movement/Podiatry/Occupational Therapy and others
- Business (Economics, Accounting, Finance, Statistics and others)
- Arts and Education
- Law
Academic Peer Support
Further to the scheduled tutorials, students have the opportunity to contact the academic tutors and organise a one-on-one tutorial on an ad-hoc and informal basis. This allows students the opportunity to seek assistance on a more personal and tailored level.
Peer Contacts
In addition to the more senior students and external academics acting as academic tutors, St Mark's College appoints several Peer Contacts who are in the earlier stages of their degree. While peer contacts are knowledgeable in their specific area of interest, their role is more of a general guide to first year students, providing insight into the workings of their faculty, examination and study techniques and advice with basic concepts associated with their subject area.
Proof Reading and Editing Support
Students who are writing essays, theses or assignments have available to them a proofreading and editing service operated by senior Arts, Humanities and Science students of St Mark's College.
Students can email an essay to the groups' designated address, and this essay will be then be allocated to one of the students to edit and proofread. The essay will be returned with changes and comments typically within 48 hours.
This service provides students with the opportunity to have a ‘fresh set of eyes' look over their assignments, and be provided with crucial feedback which could change that final grade from a Pass to a Credit or even a Distinction to a High Distinction!
